Salaam Posture

Yet again the starting position is the Vajrasana. Sitting with the back straight, inhale and raise the arms straight up, palms forward. Exhaling, lower the straight arms slowly forwards, at the same time lowering the head, shoulders, and torso towards the floor. Place the palms of the hands flat on the floor and lower the forehead also to the floor. Keep the buttocks down between the heels. Stay down for six to ten seconds; then, inhaling, raise the arms and upper body slowly upright. Remain a few seconds with arms raised and the back straight; then bring the arms down on to the knees, exhaling. You have returned to the Thunderbolt Posture again. Repeat once.

The Salaam Posture limbers the spine, shoulders, and legs, stretches the neck, back muscles, and arms, and calms and tones the nervous system. Circulation is improved and a nourishing flow of blood is brought to the facial tissues and scalp. The pressure on the abdomen provides an internal massage, aiding digestion and correcting constipation. The psychological overtones are those associated with making an obeisance.
